Fresno, California – In observance of Día de Muertos, Education and Leadership Foundation (ELF) held a community conversation and presentation on voting at St. Johns Episcopal Cathedral. This effort was part of the larger “Can’t Stop CA” community celebrations happening across the state to let voters know there is an election, and to turn in their mail-in ballot early.
During Cafecito con el Pueblo, ELF shared important information on deadlines and voting locations with parishioners over coffee and pan dulce. This provided an opportunity for the community, including many first-time voters, to share their questions in a safe space, especially during a time where there is concern and confusion.
As part of the event, parishioners took part in an interactive voting exercise that used pan dulce and donuts to illustrate the power of voting. Participants cast ballots for their favorite pastry, and the winning treat was then shared with everyone. This hands-on, lighthearted activity offered a tangible reminder that every vote matters and that participation—no matter how small the scale—can shape the outcome for the entire community.
“We are excited to spread the message of civic duty and making your voice heard,” said Priscilla Ramos of the Education and Leadership Foundation. “By being here with the community, we’re able to encourage everyone who can to vote—and those who are eligible to naturalize to do so and take part in this vital part of the American experience at the next election. We want to thank Father Nelson and St. John’s Episcopal Cathedral for opening their doors and allowing us to carry out this celebration.”
Californians are showing that the best way to overcome fear and intimidation is by turning to one another: voting together, voting early and voting joyfully.
